Jolene

Jolene walked down the hallway of the private school she attended, invisible. Or at least she might as well be. Word traveled fast, it seemed. Yesterday all the boys had their eye on her; at sixteen, Jolene had a body like a supermodel, and she dressed to show it to her best advantage.

All the guys wanted to sleep with her, and she'd sampled more than a few of the boys from the more powerful council families in Reno, knowing she'd have the pick of the lot when the time came to marry in a few years. Most of the magic users married young, council politics being what they were.

But yesterday, yesterday that had all come crashing down into ruin. Jolene, the hottest girl in the school, the one even the professors and the adults lusted after, the one who never missed a class and had the highest marks in all the magical theory classes, the one who had had shown so much promise for her family, who themselves were among the elite of the elite…Yesterday Jolene had been ruled vas inane.

An empty shell.

Oh, she could manipulate magic, and she could do it better than any of her classmates, but she had no mana of her own, no magic. She had so little inside her that she couldn't cast any decent spell unaided. She had just enough to be considered a magic user, but not enough to really do anything with it.

The fight between her parents last night had been the worst she'd ever seen, accusations flying back and forth between her mother and father over her failure. The words they'd used against each other had been bad, but they'd torn her heart into pieces, because those words had all been about her.

"Not so proud anymore, are you, blank," said Heather Roth, one of the older girls, who'd been jealous of Jolene's looks ever since Jolene 'stole' her boyfriend.

"At least I'm not ugly," Jolene muttered back, but her heart wasn't in it.

"You should take your powerless ass out of here," Carol Scott, Heather's best friend, said. "This school is for magic users, not worthless mundanes or blanks like yourself!"

Jolene sighed heavily as she walked away from them quickly. Catching sight of herself in the reflection of a window, she almost grimaced. Her perfect hair wasn't perfect this morning. Then again, she wasn't dressed to the nines either. Just a pair of tight jeans, a loose sweatshirt, and a pair of sneakers.

"Hey, Jo," Michael Whyte said, coming up to her and looking a bit embarrassed.

"Hi, Michael." Jolene sighed.

"Umm, I umm."

Jolene hung her head and sighed again. "Please, just say it, Mike."

"I can't go out with you tonight; I have, umm, other things I need to do."

"Yeah, okay…" Jolene could feel her eyes watering a little. Michael and she had been an item for months now. She didn't even flirt with other guys anymore.

"I'm sorry, Jo."

Jolene sniffed. "I'm sorry too, Mike. Really, I'm sorry too."

"What are you going to do? Are you gonna…"

Jolene sniffed again, as the question was left hanging there.
